TAPE 658

Quality: VG

Length: 6 hrs (DVD)

WEEKLY PRO TOKYO DOME SHOW - 4/2/95 (Incredible! Long thought not to exist outside the New Japan offices, here we have the *PRO SHOT* version of this historic show! No more relying on a crappy handheld of the jumbotron. This is raw footage, with no commentary. The story here is that Weekly Pro magazine sent out invitations to every federation in Japan to send a match to this show. Most groups sent their very best match, but the New Japan main event was so bad that the tape - with the rights held by New Japan - was never released. Until now! Also, this has a "film" look to it, almost like a PAL/NTSC conversion. Quality is VG with some minor audio crackling.)
Devil Masami, Mayumi Ozaki, Cutie Suzuki & Hiroumi Yagi vs Dynamite Kansai, Candy Okusu, Hikari Fukuoka & Fusayo Nochi (JWP - Masami - who might just be my favorite joshi wrestler, takes an incredible kick right to the head from Kansai. Just BRUTAL. She also takes a top rope powerbomb.) Shinobu Kandori vs Harley Saito (LLPW - UFC Rules - legit shoot) Manami Toyota & Blizzard Yuki vs Aja Kong & Kyoko Inoue (AJW - Toyota takes an awesome spinning back fist that you can actually HEAR. This match has some video flashes in it.) Lou Thesz Speech (Thesz comes out and gives a speech about pro wrestling and how it's great to be around real pro wrestling, etc. Weekly Pro shows their respect for him by putting this speech right before...) Ryuma Go vs Uchu Maijin Silver X (Go Gundan - Alien Death Match - The story here is that Ryuma Go fights the invasion of aliens through his Go Gundan wrestling federation. This match is essentially a 5-on-1 handicap for Go with the referee not even trying to stop the interference or anything. Awful, just awful.) Nobuhiko Takada vs Shiro Koshinaka, New Japan, 5/19/86 (Ultra-rare handheld! This match was never taped by NJ so it is rarely seen. Takada wins the IWGP jr title in an excellent ***1/2 match. Quality is basically VQ with a real nice angle of the match.) Cactus Jack & The Headhunters vs Terry Funk, Leatherface & Shoji Nakamaki (IWA - Barbed Wire Bat & Boards) Minoru Suzuki vs Christopher DeWeaver (Pancrase - looks like a work to me) Yoshiaki Fujiwara & Yuki Ishikawa vs Carl Greco & Don Arakawa (PWFG - PWFG is a shoot-style group, so naturally they come out and do a comedy match. WTF?) TAKA Michinoku, Gran Naniwa & Super Delfin vs Great Sasuke, Shiryu & SATO (Michinoku Pro) Akira Maeda vs Chris Dolman (RINGS - Terrible match that's very short. Looks like it's Dolman's retirement or something. Not sure why you'd send this piece of crap match to a show this huge. Makes no sense.) Nobuhiko Takada, Masahito Kakihara & Billy Scott vs Gary Albright, Kazuo Yamazaki & Gene Lydick (UWFI - Excellent match - ***1/2 or so - that could have easily gone another 5-10 minutes. Gene Lydick told me being in this match, on this show, was like being in the Super Bowl for him. Can you blame him? This is the only 6-man match in UWFI history, btw.) Atsushi Onita vs Mr. Pogo (FMW - No-rope exploding barbed wire - Onita & Pogo do their Great Neat & Great Pogo gimmicks for this one. This is pretty much your typical FMW main event, nothing special.) Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi & Stan Hansen vs Toshiaki Kawada, Akira Taue & Johnny Ace (AJPW - Excellent 30-min draw that showcases what All Japan is all about. Lots of action, stiffness, big moves, etc. Great stuff. There's no audio for a fairly decent portion of this match.) Shinya Hashimoto vs Masa Chono (NJPW - The story is that this match was so bad/boring after the big efforts from the other groups earlier in the show that New Japan has refused to release the show out of embarrassment. I don't buy it. This match isn't nearly that bad, though it definitely isn't great.) Toshiaki Kawada vs Yoshihiro Takayama, UWFI, 9/11/96 (Handheld - Kawada's only UWFI appearance! Historic, hard-hitting match. This is an EX-quality handheld of the jumbotron at the stadium, so the picture has a green tint to it.)
