TAPE 667
Quality: EX (*MASTER*)
Length: 6 hrs (3 DVD)
BAS RUTTEN CAREER MMA (AWESOME! This set RULES. This is a 3-disc set
covering Bas Rutten's entire career in MMA. EVERY match from Pancrase is shown on this
set, in its ENTIRETY. Highlights from his two UFC fights are on the third disc. And
the kicker? The entire set features Bas doing commentary for all of his fights! This
makes them incredibly instructional, as well as entertaining as Bas is quite hilarious
as always. This is truly a must-own for the MMA fan. I've got digital copies of the
DVDs, so quality is EX.)
Bas Rutten vs Ryushi Yanagisawa, 9/21/93 (Bas makes an incredible debut in MMA on the
first-ever Pancrase show with a stunning 43-second KO.)
Bas Rutten vs Takaku Fuke, 10/14/93
Bas Rutten vs Masa Funaki, 1/19/94 (One of the criticisms of Pancrase in their early
years is that they were known to have had at least a few works. I don't know that
Rutten has ever done a work in a shoot group, but this one sure looks fishy for
some reason.)
Bas Rutten vs Vernon White, 4/21/94
Bas Rutten vs Yoshiki Takahashi, 5/31/94 (Bas breaks Takahashi's leg - the wild thing is
that Takahashi KEEPS FIGHTING. He even throws a kick with the injured leg, and
then it's all over. OUCH.)
Bas Rutten vs Minoru Suzuki, 7/6/94
Bas Rutten vs Ken Shamrock, 7/26/94 (Ken Shamrock - the only guy Bas never beat.
Kinda surprising, cuz Ken was never THAT good.)
Bas Rutten vs Jason Delucia, 10/15/94
Bas Rutten vs Frank Shamrock, 12/16/94
Bas Rutten vs Manabu Yamada, 1/26/95
Bas Rutten vs Ken Shamrock, 3/10/95 (The last loss of Rutten's career. At this point,
his record was 7-4. When he retired, he was 27-4-1 - incredible!)
Bas Rutten vs Takaku Fuke, 4/8/95
Bas Rutten vs Maurice Smith, 5/13/95
Bas Rutten vs Jason Delucia, 6/13/95
Bas Rutten vs Frank Shamrock, 7/23/95
Bas Rutten vs Minoru Suzuki, 9/1/95 (Rutten wins King of Pancrase title)
Bas Rutten vs Maurice Smith, 11/4/95
Bas Rutten vs Ryushi Yanagisawa, 12/14/95
Bas Rutten vs Guy Mezger, 3/2/96
Bas Rutten vs Katsuomi Inagaki, 4/8/96
Bas Rutten vs Frank Shamrock, 5/16/96 (Bit of a famous match as Bas & Frank fall out of
the ring and narrowly avoid serious injury. Funny moment later when Frank hits
Bas with a girly slap and Bas LAUGHS at him. Bas nails a nice backfist too.)
Bas Rutten vs Jason Delucia, 6/25/96 (Delucia pisses off Rutten by claiming he's being
hit with illegal punches and kicks to the groin, when the blows were all legal.
Rutten gets mad and KOs him "in the most painful way possible" and mocks him on
commentary too. This one is great!)
BAS RUTTEN VS MASA FUNAKI, 9/7/96 (Funaki takes a beating in this one, with Bas breaking
his nose early on with a vicious palm strike. Great fight, though, with Funaki
showing a ton of heart.)
Bas Rutten vs Manabu Yamada, 10/8/96
Bas Rutten vs Osami Shibuya, 3/22/97 (The only blemish on the last 21 fights of Rutten's
career is this one - a draw. Bas breaks his own sternum during this fight and
is scared of hurting himself, so he fights very tentatively and ends with a draw.)
Bas Rutten vs Kuma Kunioku, 4/27/97
Bas Rutten vs Takaku Fuke, 6/30/97
Bas Rutten vs Osami Shibuya, 9/6/97
Bas Rutten vs Kei Yamamiya, 12/20/97
Bas Rutten vs Kengo Watanabe, 9/14/98 (After the fight, Bas challenges Rickson Gracie
to a fight. Unfortuanately, that fight never came to pass.)
Bas Rutten vs Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, UFC, 1/8/99 (Highlights)
Bas Rutten vs Kevin Randleman, UFC, 5/7/99 (Highlights - Rutten wins UFC heavyweight
title. Bas would resign the heavyweight title so he could fight at middleweight.
Unfortunately, he'd suffer a series of serious injuries before he could do that
and would instead retire. He truly was a groundbreaking fighter and easily one of
the greatest of all-time as his record attests. He unquestionably would have been
an elite fighter in Pride had he come along just 5 years later.)
