ROH "JOE vs KOBASHI" - 10/1/05 (This is the much-hyped and anticipated ROH show featuring the dream Samoa Joe vs Kenta Kobashi match-up. This is essentially a 1-match show, with nothing much of interest outside of the main event. I'll give ROH credit - the production on this is really nice, especially for an indy. I have a 2-disc copy off of a master so quality is exactly the same as a master, just without the menus.)
Claudio Castagnoli vs Colt Cabana Matt Sydal vs Azrieal vs Christopher Daniels Sal Rinauro & Tony Mamaluke vs BJ Whitmer & Jimmy Jacobs (Rinauro & Mamaluke win the ROH tag titles) Jay Lethal vs Nigel McGuinness Jimmy Rave vs Roderick Strong (And now we come to what was definitely a problem throughout this show - the ridiculous amount of profanity. In general, it's coming from the fans with their chants and yelling at wrestlers. Here, however, we've got a guy who is a face - Roderick Strong - dropping an f-bomb on a fan because the fan is talking on a cell phone. Sorry, but that's just ridiculous.) Ricky Reyes vs Pelle Primeau James Gibson vs Jimmy Yang Jack Evans vs Homicide (Evans, fresh off some injuries, takes a nasty bump on the guardrail. Some guys just never learn...) Kenta Kobashi vs Samoa Joe (Much has been written about this match being a classic, a MOTY candidate, etc. It isn't. What we have is a good, maybe ***, match worked in front of a wildly appreciative, if overly dorky, audience. The atmosphere is incredible from the get-go and even Kobashi seems taken aback by it. Unfortunately, he left all of his high-end offense back home in Tokyo. He's also forced to constantly stop and wait for Joe, who looks to have been gassed by a minute into the match. Not good. Way too much repetition for this to be a great match, it's still definitely worth seeing and for sure makes me wish I'd been able to see it in person.)
